Raymond Daniel Smith, Sr.

Raymond Daniel Smith, Sr., 78, formerly of Marathon, NY, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, June 21, 2024, at the Guthrie Cortland Regional Medical Center, Cortland, NY.

Ray was born in Patterson, NJ, on August 6, 1945, the son of the late James and Helen Fells Smith. A longtime resident of the area, he was a graduate of Marathon Central School. He retired from NYS Department of Transportation in 2000 after 34 years of service. Ray was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and playing golf. He was a longtime member of the Maple Hill Golf Course and a staple at Riley’s Restaurant.

He is survived by his sons, Kenneth (Christine) Smith of Cicero and Raymond (Tracy) Smith, Jr. of Willet. He also leaves behind his grandchildren, Staci (Jared) Quiza of Warwick, Kenny (Caleigh Gran) Smith of N. Syracuse, Brittany (Evan) Bazelle of Destin, FL, Chelsea Smith, Jacob Smith, and Joshua Smith, all of Willet; his great-grandchildren, Preston and Chase Quiza; a sister, Kathy (Craig) Braman of Marathon; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers, James, Richard, Robert and Gary Smith.

The family will be present to receive friends at the Marathon Memorial Chapel, 4071 State Route 221, Marathon, NY, on Thursday, June 27, 2024, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. There will be no formal funeral service.
