Jean Alene (Ensign) Carman

Jean Alene (Ensign) Carman, 85, of Marathon, NY, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 16, 2022, at her home, while surrounded by her family.

Jean was born in Cortland, NY, on July 16, 1937, one of seven children born to the late Frank and Alene (Glezen) Ensign.  A lifelong resident of the area, she was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Cortland.  For over 25 years, she drove school bus for the Marathon Central School District and helped her late husband, Augustus Carman, on the family farm.  She had also previously been employed by Amsco, Binghamton.  In her spare time, she enjoyed bowling and playing golf.  Jean was a wonderful mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who was loved and cherished by her family and friends.

She is survived by her children, Walter Carman of Marathon, Marie Carman of Marathon, Brenda (Thomas) Crook of Redmond, WA, and Cora (Martin) Bruns of Holland Patent.  She also leaves behind her grandchildren, Daniel, Gregory, Christopher, Samantha, Victoria and Kaitlin; and her great-grandchildren, Nolan, Madison, Liam, Linken, Charles, Afton, Claire, Joshua Jacob, and Beckett; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Augustus “Gus” Carman on August 31, 2019; a granddaughter, Hannah Crook in 2021; and six siblings.

Funeral services will be held at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 3725 Fairview Drive, Cortland, NY, on Monday, August 22, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. with Bishop Corey Burger and Dennis Miller officiating.  Burial will be in Marathon Cemetery.  There will be no prior calling hours.  Expressions of sympathy in memory of Jean may be directed to Hospice & Palliative Care Services of Cortland County, 11 Kennedy Parkway, Cortland, NY 13045.
