Dayton Bruce Allen, 78, of Marathon, NY, passed away on Thursday, December 9, 2021, at Wilson Memorial Hospital, Johnson City, NY.
Bruce was born in the Town of Lapeer on April 23, 1943, the son of the late Webster and Frances Kingbury Allen. A lifelong resident of the area, he was a 1962 graduate of Marathon Central School. He retired from Cornell University and also owned The Hitching Rail in Virgil for several years. Bruce was an avid hunter who loved spending time in the outdoors. He also enjoyed watching baseball, especially the NY Yankees, and farming. Most important to Bruce was spending time with his family.
He is survived by his children, Dayton (Sylvia) Allen II of Groton, Lori (Jared) Walter of Columbus, IN, Richard Allen of Atlanta, GA, William “B.J.” (Jaime) Allen of Marathon, Frederick (Jillian) Allen of Marathon, Roni (Garrett Burns) Allen of Lisle, and Samuel Allen of Marathon. He also leaves behind several grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; siblings, Violet Payne of Berkshire, Joyce Payne of Marathon, Larry Allen of Lapeer, and Donna Canfield of Harford Mills; his first wife, Barbara (Bob) Nash of Pleasant Shade, TN; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Sharon Voorhees Allen, in 2014; a daughter, Carol Tanner, in 1998; and siblings, Gary Allen, Rose Payne, Daisy Hammond, and Gloria Allen.
The family will be present to receive friends at the Marathon Memorial Chapel, 4071 State Route 221, Marathon, NY, on Tuesday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday, December 15, 2021, at 11:00 a.m. with Reverend Tom Boice officiating. COVID-19 protocol will be followed and everyone must wear a mask. Burial will be in Marathon Cemetery at a later date. Expressions of sympathy in memory of Bruce may be made to the MAVAC Building Fund, P.O. Box 132, Marathon, NY 13803.
